The solo exhibition at Casa della Memoria is the result of Chilean artist Anelli Wolf's residency in Milan at Viafarini in 2022 and presents a series of black-and-white paintings reinterpreting photographs from Museo MUFOCO's photographic archive and funds on 20th century Italian cinema. The exhibition accompanies the venue during MuseoCity 2024 and in the initiatives related to 8 March - International Women's Day.
The artist's gaze is feminist, insolent and ironic, the greyscale strokes veil and evoke, affirm and erase the physical and symbolic place women have occupied in contemporary society.
The choice of subjects in these paintings ranges from different scenarios, from key images of the Resistance to more intimate and elusive fragments. Her paintings speak to us of the desire for power, intimacy, friendship between women and their role within the family.
Curator Giulio Verago emphasises that "the artist questions the role of women in Italy in the 20th century, the grey scale of the brushstrokes seems to emphasise the ambiguity of a difficult condition that is often relegated to the margins of public debate."
The body of works on display also reveals the mechanisms of the imbalance of power between men and women and the tendency of the male gaze to objectify the female body.
Anelys Wolf (1974) attended the Faculty of Art at the University of Chile (1993-1996).
From 1999 to 2008, she collaborated with numerous cultural institutions on the island of Chiloé (Chile). In 2009, thanks to a Fondart scholarship, he moved to France and since 2010 has exhibited in various countries (in addition to Italy Austria, France, Portugal, Ireland, Spain, Germany and Canada) and in contemporary art spaces in Chile. She currently lives on the island of Chiloé.
